The scholarly published article is “A Scientific Prediction of the Discovery of the First Potentially Habitable planet with a Mass Similar to Earth”. The scholar paper mainly focused on using authentic evidence and mathematical formulas to prove that the finding of a new planet is possible to support lives. The author uses the convention of research paper, which provides the thesis in an academic way. In order to make the paper more authoritative, the author divided the whole paper into several sections with subtitles. In each section parts, the author mainly focused on one particular area to introduce the topic. For example, in the abstraction part, the author highlights the main topic like “background” and “methodology”. By doing this, the readers will find it well structured and easy to follow. The main purpose of the paper is to provide the author’s idea to a scholarly audience for discussion. In this case, the paper is quite long to make the point stable and explicit. Hence, the organization is pretty strict in order to make readers easy to find where they are reading about. Instead of dividing the paper into several sections, the author also uses more academic words and fails to explain them. By doing this, the author makes the paper appear more formal to the professional scholars. Facing this specific audience, the author uses different moves like using academic words and conventions like following the genre of research paper. When other writers want to display the idea of this scholar paper to a more general audience like the normal citizens, they need to consider other genres to better represent to them.

When the audience is kids, the specific genre that is useful to display the idea of discovering life-support planet is scientific novels. Unlike scholarly published research paper, the genre of scientific novels may expresses the same main idea but in a more funny way. The writers of scientific novels may use imagination to color an scholar idea. While the research paper reports that some estrasolar planets may support lives by using Kepler’s law, the writers of scientific novels will focus on imaging what the life looks like in that planet. They will use exaggerated imagination to depict a new life style of that planet without scientific evidence. In addition, there is no need to give an explanation about why this planet could support life. While methodology is quite important part to support an academic essay in order to make it authentic, scientific novels only needs imaginations to support his idea by making the idea into an interesting story. Although they both expresses the same idea of life-support planets, the different audience will cause the writers to use different genres to better represent the idea. For example, one specific audience, the teenagers that are between 16 to 20 are interested in creative fictions that contains imagination and mysterious stories. It is useful to use scientific fiction as a genre to displays the idea of life-support plants. Instead of using academic words like research paper, the author in scientific fiction use super heroes or other creatures to represent the symbol of new lives that live on that planet. Moreover, in order to grab teenagers’ interests, the authors use colorful pictures and interesting anecdotes to make the boring academic idea more entertaining to teenagers. By doing this, the teenagers will find it interesting to keep reading and also the scientific novels keep teaching the scholar idea.

  On the other hand, when the audience is grown-ups, parents especially, it is essential to grab what they desire to know besides the academic idea. In this case, a news report would be a good choice. Compare to teenagers, what the parents care the most is the reality. When they know that a possible life-support planet exists, they wonder how this will affect their lives instead of having fantasy about that planet. In this case, choosing news report to display this scientific idea to adults like parents help better explain the connection between this planet and the daily lives. The reason is that as a news report, it only displays ideas that can be proved scientifically. Unlike scientific novels that sometimes can lack evidence in stories, news report, to some extent, more strictly follow science viewpoint. Moreover, unlike a research paper that only provides evidence of find that planet, the news report will normally neglects to report the evidence. This is that the audience in news report is normally not that as professional as scholars. The main purpose of news report is to connect this scientific idea to people’s daily lives. For example, the news report may express the idea that this planet may provide a new living system for humans. In this case, news report can better grab the parents attention and also keep the scientific idea.

In the article “Introduction to Primary Research: Observations, Surveys, and Interviews”, the author mainly talks about how to do primary research when we write academic essays. The author divides the essay into different areas with subtitles, which makes the readers easy to focus on each part.  He uses the convention of research paper which has organized quite clearly by different areas. The first is introduction part. Like a research paper, it usually is started with an introduction part that discuss the definition of topic and how the paper will be structured. The introduction part works like a graph in the essay. The author talks the definition of primary research. He uses the words like “the essay begins by providing…” to introduce the different areas that he will focus to discuss primary research. In his words, he will talks ethical considerations first, and then he will cover the four stages in primary research: planning, collecting, analyzing and writing. At last, he will talk three ways to conduct primary research: observation, interview and survey. It is straightforward to know the overall organization of the essay by reading only the introduction part. In this case, it is very clear to see that the next subtitles are all in the same sequence as the introduction part said. In each subtitle part, he also labels those important details so that they appear more obvious for readers. In order to make a clear organization in his paper, the author not only divides those sub parts into small areas, but also uses the graph to better present a clear structure. The examples he uses in his different areas are presented by paragraphs and slashed, which in turn makes them explicit and gives the readers the hint that those are not included into the main part which, to some extent, can be neglected when focusing the main point. For example, the author talks the different ways to make a question in survey. He talks about some important tips of making survey questions. To better illustrate his point, he uses straightforward examples to clarify his point. Those examples are succinct but sufficient, because they are slashed and used in an independent paragraph. The author uses bunch of directional words to make his essay more organized and well-structured. For example, when he discussed how to describe the method of research you used in writing, he utilized the hint words to tell the readers what he was going to say, like “the following is the sample..” and “the purpose of an introduction is...”. At the end of the essay, he also uses the conclusion  part like every research paper does. In his conclusion part, he again uses the words like “this essay has presented an overview about...” to successfully grab the readers’ eyes to focus on his main point. In addition, he uses numbers to present his small points. Overall, the moves of this author makes the paper very organized and easy to follow by using hint words, graphs to present his idea, and subtitles to classify his points. 

   The other article that I choose is “Annoying Ways People Use Source” is quite different from the former one. Throughout the whole essay, it has no subtitles, no graphs, and no other methods that helps make the essay’s structure obvious. Unlike the former article that starts with an introduction part which directly discusses about the definition of the author’s main point, this essay’s author uses an analogy or an anecdote to start his essay. By doing this, readers will can it interesting and will continue reading. The author uses his daily life story to connect with academic writing successfully grab readers interests. And the important part is that the author continues uses this story to compare academic writing. By doing this, the paper will appear more coherent and hence the readers will find out why this story can better represent the academic writing. After the author has introduced the story, he talks about the academic writing by grabbing the common feature of these two area:The convention. Like you can not driving without knowing some basic rules, you still can not writing without following some rhetoric conventions. Since he has introduced convention in writing subconsciously, he formally defines the definition and gives an specific name: Annoyance. After that, he discusses plenty of examples that use writing conventions inappropriately. The purpose is to fix it in a correct way, which in turn shows the readers how to use convention in academic writing implicitly but easy to comprehend. Like the former article, this essay’s author also highlights the important points for readers. 

   Both articles claim their main point in their first paragraph, and use evidence and examples to support his thesis, and at last have a conclusion part to retell the main point in their essays. The different is the way they introduce their thesis and they way they present their evidence. The former one tends to focus on organization and hence can be easy to read for readers, the last one is more interesting and need to read throughout in order to comprehend the author’s point.

  I chose the comic topic from two different genres. One is from UCSB library, the scholarly academic publications,and the other is from common comic genre generator. The scholar article is about the academic study of comic. The same topic in those completely different genres have different rhetoric features. 

   Firstly and obviously is that the comic generator is more about making the audience laugh with cynical words and exaggerated facial expression of characters; on the contrary, the academic publication more tends to research the type of genre--comic. It aims to discuss the definition of comic and the components that make up of it. In this case, the scholar article is not funny at all. To some extent, it is not that easy to understand compared to comic books. This different purpose of these two genres is the reason why the audience of these two genres are completely different. In the comic genre generator, the jokes created to everyone who like jokes. They are mostly teenagers, but some adults also read them for relaxing. In the scholar article, the essay is provided for discussion among academic scholars, most are linguistic or language professors. This is because the author of this article aims to delve the comic genre as a study in linguistic area. 

   Although they are both about comic topics, the different purpose and audience make them have different conventions also. In scholar article, it has more academic words about linguistic like “Bande Dessinee” that are complicated to understand, even though they have notation of them. In comic generator, on contrast, it has less words than pictures. Some words are even used to describe a movement instead of having real meaning. This is also because that the aim of comic generator is to relaxing the audience, and hence the less words will make it better. Also, the scholar article is provided to linguistic professors, which in turn makes it have more academic words in that area. It is not designed easy for understanding for the general audience. 

In scholar article, the author use references to make his paper more believable and authoritative. These references are also from some scholarly publications like New York Study Museum. Rference is an essential convention in scholar article because it shows that the author did a bunch of academic research of the topic and, therefore, makes an convinced conclusion with accurate evidence. In comic generator, it has no restrict rule that says the author must tell the origin of that jokes. The jokes can be the sarcasm of political events nowadays, or it can be some mimicry of some popular celebrities’ funny laughs. In this case, all it matters in comic generator is to get the laughing effects. 

The context of those two genres are also different from each other. In the scholar article, the author uses plenty of resources from other scholar publications to help him develop his idea of comic genre. In his paper, he discussed the definition of comic through the whole paper based his research own analysis and other different disciplines. In the comic generator, there is no specific background behind that jokes. The joke means nothing in real world. It just the moment that make people laugh and then people will forget it. It is created out of inspiration perhaps. It is not created to memorize some special event or has other feature that makes it valuable for long-time study. In this case, jokes from comic generator tend to be consumed by the audience; the scholar article from academic publication has the value to study, discuss among the specific audience.

In SCI generator, the essays are about computer science research paper. Research paper, as one of the specific type of genres, has its own common conventions, and this generator website contains the main conventions of the genre. One common convention is that they target small professional audience. Research papers are the type of writing that are hard to understand for people who have little knowledge on the area. Hence, they normally don’t get published in public magazines or scientific journals. They tend to be read among those professional scholars in that area. Another convention is that they break up the research outcome and procession by parts. Normally they have the abstraction part, introduction part, architecture part, implement part, result part, related work part, and conclusion part. They start with a title that introduce professional knowledge in that area. Those research papers are quite long that not only easily distract readers but also increase the difficulty to find the thesis of the paper. In this case, they have the abstraction part, one of the conventions of research paper, to mainly introduce the topic and the conclusion of the research. Moreover, they have an introduction part to introduce what the research is and the preparation of the research. Then they will have architecture part which mainly talks about the method of finishing the research. In implement part they contain the process of the research. Sometimes the result part is similar to the conclusion part, and therefore some papers only have one of them, which concludes the research outcome. The related work part is similar to the work cited page in academic writing, which contains citation. Similarly, some papers tend to use reference instead of using this part. 

In comic generator, I tried to generate couple of jokes. Unfortunately, I don’t think I find fun in it. But this comic genre has very common conventions. First, it has pictures. The form of narrating stories is based on the conversation between two people. It must be short enough to achieve the goal of relaxing. Otherwise, people will just find boring like the research paper which is too long that get break up into several parts. In comic generators, the comic stories are only have three pictures. The outcome in comic must be different from common sense. This characteristic can be  used to satirize the current event, or just playing the role of relaxing. The surprising outcome basically is how the comic gets its fun from. Another interesting convention of comic genre is that the strange way of picturing. The pictures in comic tend to exaggerate the facial expression of the characters in order to get funny effect. The audience of comic from this generator, in my opinion, is for children, because I really don’t think it is funny or it satirizes something. It is kind of boring to me at least.

Meme generator is very popular through internet nowadays. The convention is straightforward. First, it also has the picture like comic genre. The difference about the picture is that meme has to contain the popular character in the picture, mostly only one character. It can be a character from a popular cartoon movie, or a main character in a popular comic story. In other words, the pictures in meme genre has one popular character in the picture that takes nearly the whole spaces. In addition, there are at most two short sentences that separately are put on the top and the bottom of the picture. Letters in those sentences are capitalized in order to attract attention. The meaning of the sentences are connected to the character in the picture. Sometimes it is the famous saying from that character, and sometimes the character in the picture visualizes the sentences. Between those two crucial conventions in meme genre, it is unnecessary to define which must follow which. This genre will work perfect only those two conventions have strong connection. The sentences must make sense based on the character in the picture. Those sentences can either be used for fun like comic genre do, or be so famous that get wide spread through internet. The audience of meme genre is basically those who use internet a lot, because it is rare to see those pictures in public places, like at mall or school.

Collage admission essay is one special genre that not only is independent from general academic writing, but also is never similar to personal writing, like diaries. On the one hand, collage admission essay needs to state the interesting fact about applicants, which in turn requires some anecdote or stories to be impressive. On the other hand, it can not be too casual because it is a formal essay that requires feedback or evaluation. In this case, a collage admission essay becomes its own writing style that has its own convention..

   In collage admission essay, it is important to accurately describe the applicants’ competence that can not be found in test and grades, like talent and special ability or personality. The collage will evaluate the applicants’ competence based on scores and this essay. Some collages tend to be more focus on the essay because, according to my instructor in high school, it reveals the important characteristics that can help the collage administrators to find potential students instead of only those with high grades. In this case, collage administrators will focus more on the applicants’ inner quality instead of their compliments. Another important convention of collage admission essay is to use the words academically. When applicants need examples to prove what inner quality they have, academic words will help the examples more formal. For example, when I tried to use the story of volunteering in Nepal to exhibit that I am an adventurer and also love helping others, I didn’t write the story like I did in my diary; instead, I used more serious words like “achieve” rather than “do” to connect the noun “goal”. In this case, my anecdote sounds more formal that can be shown to public or collage for evaluation.

   In collage admission essay, the audience is mainly the collage administrators. But sometimes the essay will work better if the applicants deem themselves to be the audience. Collage administrators tend to know the inner quality from this essay. In this case, applicants will reflect themselves better when they are talking with themselves. The reason is that people always feel comfortable showing their inner personality to someone familiar, like their family or themselves. Although collage admission essay needs to be read in front of many scholars in collage, applicants can make the collage administrators know their inner personality better by making the essay an self-narrating style.

   The purpose of admission essay is to help the applicants easily get admitted by the collage by leaving an impression. For example, some applicants mainly focus on getting admitted by the collage; therefore, their collage admission essay tends to be more persuasive. Their essays usually have strictly structure. To be more specific, a thesis in introduction part emphasizes the great personality or experience they have.Examples and illustrations will be given as arguments in the following paragraphs. These essays have a strong direction, which is trying to help get admitted. When applicants tend to introduce themselves more in collage admission essay, their essays are less persuasive and more interesting.

My name is Yue You. "You" actually doesn't pronounce as "you" in English, however, the correct one kind of sounds like "yo", which is also hilarious. My last name always makes me embarrassed in public, because people often call me Miss.You loudly. Then I wonder: who miss me?

I'm from China, a complex country to describe. When talking about China, some people here ask me questions which are sufficient to become a paper topic. For example,they ask “Is China clean?” or “Is it still communism?”. I wonder how the word“clean”can be sufficient to describe a place with 9.6 million square kilometers? I really don’t know how to answer, and also I really don’t want to disappoint them, or make the sisutation even more embarrassed,hence, I just nod my head and they will transfer it to their desired answers.

I have a crazy family. My father likes to play jokes with me. When I was just a little kid in kindergarten, my father told me that there was a ghost who only eats kids’feet if those feet are shown outside of the quilt when sleeping. That was a summer. I sweated at night because I barely had the courage to put my feet outside the quilt, and failed to sleep because of fear. Under such childhood, I totally inherited this spirit from my father. When my brother was born, I realized that I was the lucky one because there was only one person who “bully” me in my childhood, but as for my brother, there were actually two.

I like indie music and like watching movies. I can’t stop being excited when talking movies. Recently I got crazy about Majong, one of Chinese traditional board games. I played Majong in this whole winter break at La, big bear, and even at the goleta beach. I just can’t stop playing.
